"Deep thoughts” on the sound of light
With Aboma Merdasa, Ophthalmology, Lund University.
Fika: Coffee and cake will be served before the meeting, from 15:00.
Abstract:
The interaction between photons and biological tissue generates a complex and dynamic symphony of processes, giving rise to spectroscopic and acoustic signals that are challenging to decode. However, a full understanding of the underlying complexity is not always necessary, as measurable differences can still support clinical diagnostics. Our work focuses on enabling more efficient diagnostics by combining optical spectroscopy with computational methods, aiming to extract quantitative parameters directly from living human tissue.
In this talk, I will present our recent progress on non-invasive skin tumor diagnostics, highlighting the use of photoacoustic and hyperspectral imaging, where deep learning has been instrumental in achieving clinically relevant diagnostic outcomes. I will also show some preliminary results on our progress toward the development of intelligent optical systems, with the goal of enabling algorithms that can autonomously control optical components and redirect light to actively search for predefined conditions in tissue.
