SUMMARY:Joint LLC Seminar with Karsten Danzmann
DESCRIPTION:Contact: francesca.curbis@maxiv.lu.se\n\nKarsten Danzmann&nbsp\
;from Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik&nbsp\;and Institut für
Gravitationsphysik der Leibniz Universität Hannover will tell us about&nb
sp\;Gravitational Wave Astronomy: We can hear the dark universe with laser
interferometers!“Fika” (coffee and cake) will be served before the me
eting\, from 15:00.Abstract:We have been looking at the universe with our
eyes for thousands of years. Butover 99% of the universe is dark and will
never be observed with electromagneticwaves. Since September 14\, 2015\, e
verything has changed: gravitational waves havebeen discovered! We have be
en given a new sense and can finally hear the dark side ofthe universe.Sev
eral km-size laser interferometers are now operating on the earth\, usings
ensitivities at the quantum limit and also beyond the standard quantum lim
it. Ourlasers from Hannover are now the workhorse of most laser observator
ies in theworld. The first sounds we heard came from completely unexpectedl
y heavy black holes.Gravitational waves have now become a new kind of astr
onomy. Hundreds of suchevents are now recorded almost daily\, with frequen
cies ranging from a few hertz to afew kHz. And in 2035 we will also be abl
e to observe the low-frequency sources withLISA\, a laser interferometric
observatory with millions of km of arm length in themHz range. Nobody know
s what other dark secrets are still waiting for us out there.\n\nMore info
