Nini Pryds, Professor and head the research section ‘Functional Oxide Materials’ at the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage, The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) presented his research about the wide range of fascinating properties observed in complex oxide such as ferro-, piezo- and pyroelectricity.
This seminar was given in the frame of series that is organized by the three nanoscience hubs located in the Copenhagen-Lund area. The aim is to to increase awareness about our mutual capabilities and to inspire collaborations.
21st May 2021: Nini Pryds (DTU): Controlling Oxide Heterointerfaces with External Stimuli
The wide range of fascinating properties observed in complex oxide continue to attract great interest such as ferro-, piezo- and pyroelectricity. Several strategies have been employed to break the lattice symmetry and expand the range of functionalities. Beyond changing the compositions, the substrates and the preparation techniques, the response of these interfaces to external stimuli has been extensively investigated leading to a dramatic change in the electronic, magnetic and structural properties. Here, I will provide an overview on the state-of-the-art of conducting oxide interfaces and show how the properties of oxide-based heterostructures can be changed by external stimuli  using electric fields, magnetic fields [2,3], light, stress, particle bombardment, liquids, gases, and temperature. The application of a single stimulus or several stimuli combined not only provides a playground for investigation of novel materials, emergence of fascinating states of matter and novel ways to tune the interface but also opens new directions in exploring a range of new fundamental material properties.

Nini Pryds is a Professor and head the research section ‘Functional Oxide Materials’ at the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage, The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) on research in the field of memristors, piezoelectricity, thermoelectricity, electrostriction and functional oxide thin films. He has made major contributions in emerging disciplines such as Nanoionics and Iontronics, dealing with the design and control of interface-related phenomena in fast ionic and electronic conductors.
By combining highly controlled building blocks from very different material systems to realize advanced, functional systems, we aim to jointly address challenges that are out of reach for an individual center.
