Strategic Research Area
NanoLund is a Strategic Research Area in nanoscience and nanotechnology with direct funding from the Swedish Government.
In 2009 the Swedish Government launched Strategic Research Areas (SRAs) with a long-term perspective to develop and support profile areas with research at the highest international standard, and of high societal importance. SRAs are expected to be coherent knowledge environments that include basic and applied science at the international forefront, that engage in education and in strong interactions with society and industry.
The SRA funding to NanoLund supports essentially all joint activities within NanoLund. It provides vital support for our research infrastructure, including critical contributions to the running costs for Lund Nano Lab and nCHREM. At any one time, SRA co-supports approximately 50 strategically important and excellent scientific projects within NanoLund. The SRA funding is also essential for our ability to collaborate with clinics, industry and institutes.
Lund University is one of Sweden's strongest comprehensive universities and today leads, or participates in, 11 SRAs. The SRAs together engaged 20% of the university's scientists and contributed to 30% of the university's publications (numbers from 2021). In order to continue to develop the research areas and perform risk-taking, curiosity-oriented and challenge-relevant research of the highest international quality Lund University has formulated a specific SRA strategy for the coming ten years.
